In 1948, director Howard Hawks teamed up with John Wayne to make a film called Red River based on this book by Borden Chase who wrote the screen play for this wonderful western film.The lead character in the book is Tom Dunson, a cattle baron who turns into a tyrant during a cattle drive. If you have seen the movie with John Wayne, Walter Brennan and JoAnn Dru, you might want to read the book as there are some differences between the film version and the book but both are excellent and well worth the time investment to view or read.
It took me quite some time to locate this book but when I did, I purchased it right away and it arrived in perfect condition and accompanied by a swift delivery for which I was quite grateful. Read the book, see the movie, both are excellent.

A solid book that formed the basis for a much better movie, Borden Chase's "Red River" (also known as "Blazing Guns On The Chisholm Trail") is a short western that relies on hard-nosed action and prose as bitten off as a rancher's tobacco plug.
The story is the same as the John Wayne movie in key respects. Facing ruin in the post-Civil War South, Texas rancher Thomas Dunson leads a cattle drive north to where he hopes to find a buyer. But his hard ways and unilateral leadership alienate the cowboys riding with him, even young war veteran Mathew Garth, whom Dunson raised like a son.
The film was known for giving Wayne's otherwise amiable screen persona of the time a shaking up when he played Dunson, surprising even friends that the guy could really act. I doubt Wayne could have done so much with the version of Dunson who appears here; whose notably darker in personality and lacks the rays of light Wayne brings to the character in the movie. Chase's opening describes him as "thick-necked, low-jowled, with eyes that looked out at you like the rounded grey ends of bullets in a pistol cylinder." His thoughts, Chase continues, were "hidden things."
Chase's writing style is very terse, even to the point of eschewing proper grammar. Sentences often lack a subject or verb. While others spent their formative years getting educated, Chase's bio tells us he spent his driving around gangster Frankie Yale; there's a school-of-hard-knocks quality to the writing here.
His descriptions work best when the subjects are Dunson, Garth, and that cattle drive, across a dusty wasteland of hostile Chickasaw and vicious weather. As difficulties mount, Dunson becomes more unyielding about pushing his men, knowing that if he relaxes, he risks losing everything. Chase apparently described the story as "Mutiny On The Bounty" transferred to the open plains, but while Wayne's Dunson is a kind of ornery character, the novel's Dunson makes Captain Bligh seem almost pleasant.
Originally serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in 1946 and 1947, then published in 1948, "Red River" doesn't quite lay all its cards on the table. A female character, Tess Millay, is looked at as a prostitute by the main characters but never openly referred to as such, and the business of killing is often described in more elliptical fashion than you'd expect today. Tess is a rather more ruthless character in the book than she is in the movie; then again, so are most everyone else.
Big differences for those who know the movie involve the mysterious Cherry Valance, more enjoyably shaded in the movie as played by John Ireland but still a unique figure in this account, with a less supportive character arc. There's a fellow named "The Donegal" unique to the novel, and more time is spent recounting the cattle drive's importance, particularly to a Texas left starving after the war.
What "Red River" the novel lacks is a sense of personality, or maybe just empathy. You get that Dunson is tough on the first page, but the problem of his personality is not so much explored as stated and left alone. The story is a good one, and Chase's lean style is sometimes a plus, but a depth you get from watching the movie is missing here. Maybe it's not fair docking Chase some for putting together such a sturdy skeleton that someone else built upon so well, but there it is.
Great story but NOT what you saw in the movie "Red River". It is somewhat darker and grittier.
